Sunday, August 20, 2011, from 2:00-5:00 is the grand opening of the Cape St. George Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage. Guided tours and refreshments will be available to all visitors. This cottage is a spectacular addition to the existing lighthouse.
The cottage houses a museum with extensive historical displays and artifacts from the Cape St. George Lighthouse, which fell in 2005 and was reconstructed, thanks to the St. George Lighthouse Association, and put in the center of St. George Island.
This light was on Little St. George Island from 1852 until it fell in 2005. This light was the last in a series of replacements of the original light which was built on Little St. George in 1833.
Going forward from August 20th, the Lighthouse and Keeper's Cottage hours of operation will be: Open from 10 - 5 except closed on Thursdays and open Noon - 5 on Sundays.
Climbing the lighthouse and looking out over St. George Island and its waters and shorelines is unforgettable and the cottage will add a rich dimension of history to the lighthouse experience.
